Meaning: In Erikson's psychosocial theory, each life stage centers on a crisis between two possible outcomes. In adolescence (roughly ages 12 to 18) the crisis is identity versus role confusion: the teen must build a coherent sense of self from values, beliefs, goals, career direction, and social and gender roles. Resolving it well produces a stable identity and the virtue of fidelity. Failing leaves role confusion, an unclear sense of who one is and where one fits. Marcia extended this idea with four identity statuses defined by exploration and commitment: achievement (explored and committed), moratorium (exploring, not yet committed), foreclosure (committed without exploring), and diffusion (neither explored nor committed).
On the MCAT: A vignette shows a teenager trying out peer groups, beliefs, or career plans, or adopting a parent's plans without question, and asks for the Erikson stage or the Marcia status. Know the neighbors: industry vs. inferiority comes before, and intimacy vs. isolation follows.
Common confusion: Role confusion is not a disorder, and exploration is a normal part of the process, not a failure. Foreclosure can look like a secure identity, but it lacks exploration. Do not mix this stage up with Freud's genital stage (psychosexual) or Piaget's formal operational stage (cognitive). Those are different theories that cover similar ages.
